Why Meaningful Storytelling Growth Takes Time | Birth Videography Education

Behind the making of a documentary about private midwifery in North Queensland, and what the work is reminding us about presence, trust and the value of real human storytelling.

“The most meaningful creative growth often happens in the space between learning and doing.”

Initially, we described Soulful Storytellers' flagship learning experience, Soulful Storytelling for Birth Videographers (SSBV), as a course.

Technically, that's true.

There are lessons to work through, assignments to complete, and practical skills to learn.

But over time, we’ve realised calling it a course doesn’t do justice to the experience we’re facilitating.

Learning the Way Storytellers Always Have

Long before Soulful Storytellers existed online, we spent years running in-person documentary filmmaking seminars. These intensive seven-week experiences guided creatives step-by-step through the storytelling process—from learning new skills to creating a finished documentary project.

What made those experiences so powerful wasn't simply the information being taught.

It was the process.

Participants worked on real projects. They took creative risks. They collaborated with one another. They learned how to give and receive feedback. They wrestled with story, discovered new strengths, and often uncovered a creative confidence they didn't know they had.

The transformation rarely happened during the lessons themselves.

It happened in the space between learning and doing.

And when we eventually built Soulful Storytellers, we realised that was the experience we wanted to recreate.

Not simply an online course.

An apprenticeship.

Over the years, we've watched storytellers arrive feeling uncertain about their next step and leave with renewed confidence and clarity. Not because they downloaded more information. But because they were supported while putting that information into practice.

That's why we've chosen the apprenticeship model.

Not because it's trendy.

Not because it sounds impressive.

But because we've seen firsthand how powerful this kind of learning can be.

Beyond Information

Ironically, as technology has made information more accessible than ever, many creatives have found themselves feeling increasingly isolated. If anything, the abundance of information has only deepened our need for genuine connection, mentorship, and community. (link to “ Why Creative People Need Community”journal when created)

We've had creatives come to us saying they feel like they're creating on an island—surrounded by information, but with nobody who truly understands the unique challenges of birth filmmaking.

For us, apprenticeship isn't about hierarchy or gatekeeping knowledge. It's about creating an environment where storytellers can learn through a combination of education, real-world practice, mentorship, and creative community.

That's why our pathways include practical assignments and project-based learning.

It's why every Signature storyteller works toward a meaningful storytelling project of their own.

It's why we host mentorship circles, celebrate student work through our annual Film Festival, recognise artistic growth through our distinctions framework, gather for community screenings, and continue supporting storytellers through Soulful Studio long after the lessons themselves are complete.

Not as extras.

But as an extension of the learning itself.

Because becoming a storyteller isn't a box to tick.

It's an ongoing process of growth and refinement.

More Than a Course

When people ask what Soulful Storytellers is, the simplest answer is that we're an education platform.

But the more honest answer is that we're a community of storytellers learning, creating, and growing together.

A place to develop your craft.

A place to ask questions.

A place to challenge yourself creatively.

A place to find encouragement when you're stuck and inspiration when you're ready for the next step.

Most importantly, a place to continue growing. Because storytelling isn't something we master once and move on from.

It's a lifelong craft.

That's what we've always been building.

And that's why the apprenticeship model feels like the right fit.
