why recognition matters in artistic communities

The Soulful Storytellers Documentary Filmmaker Distinctions recognise meaningful progression in the development of documentary storytellers.

They reflect the learning, practice and creative development that happens through the Soulful Storytellers experience, from building strong foundations through to demonstrating mastery of documentary storytelling and filmmaking craftsmanship.

They are not industry qualifications or traditional certifications. Rather, they are a way of recognising the work, growth and creative development of filmmakers within a community committed to thoughtful, emotionally resonant storytelling.

how distinctions are awarded

Distinctions recognise progression through the Soulful Storytellers learning pathways alongside the development and application of documentary storytelling and filmmaking skills.

Emerging and Artisan distinctions may reflect milestones reached through Soulful Storytellers coursework and project work. The Master distinction is awarded selectively in recognition of exceptional documentary filmmaking and artistic contribution.

recognised within the community

Filmmakers are welcome to display their Soulful Storytellers Distinction on their website, portfolio, social platforms, Vimeo profile, email signature and other professional materials.

When displayed online, the Distinction badge can be linked back to this page, giving clients, collaborators and fellow filmmakers a place to learn more about what the recognition represents.

Shown here on the website of SSBV 2023 graduate Heidi Daniels, the Artisan Documentary Filmmaker Distinction sits alongside other filmmaking honours and professional recognition as part of her wider creative portfolio.

the path of a documentary storyteller

The Soulful Storytellers Distinctions sit alongside our apprenticeship pathways as markers of learning, practice and creative development.

But the distinction itself is never the destination.

At the heart of Soulful Storytellers is the belief that becoming a stronger filmmaker is an ongoing process of learning to observe and listen more deeply and make increasingly intentional choices with story, image, sound and edit.

Our apprenticeship gives filmmakers the space, guidance and mentorship to develop those skills while finding and refining a creative voice that remains entirely their own.
